OVC HOOPS: Lady Colonels look to push win streak to six games

RICHMOND — The Lady Colonels (8-5, 2-0 OVC) will try to stay undefeated in conference play and pick up their sixth-straight win today when they take on Eastern Illinois (6-7, 1-1) at 2 p.m. in Charleston Ill.

The game was moved from Monday to today because of the dangerous weather conditions.

The Lady Colonels are coming off a 59-54 win over Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville on Saturday.

EKU had to withstand a frantic Lady Cougar comeback in the game’s final minutes to pull out the win.

Marie Carpenter, who finished with a team-high 20 points, hit three free throws in the final 12 seconds to protect a Lady Colonel one point lead. Senior Pilar Walker added 10 points for the Lady Colonels.

The EKU offense struggled in the game, but the defense was strong all night, forcing SIUE into 10 first-half turnovers and only 27 percent shooting.

A pair of freshmen came up with big defensive stops late in the game to help the Lady Colonels hold onto their lead.

With just under four minutes remaining and EKU up by only four points, Nicole Bowers blocked a shot and came up with a steal that lead to a three-point play on the other end by Carpenter.

Then with only 30 seconds remaining and the Lady Colonels up by only two points, Michaela Hunter stole the ball from an SIUE player at mid-court and raced down for a layup to give EKU the four-point cushion that they were able to hang onto for the win.

Eastern Illinois enters the game off a 75-64 home loss to Morehead State on Saturday.

In that game, Jordyne Crunk had 18 points and Sabina Oroszova finished with 18 points and 16 rebounds.

Oroszova leads the Panthers in scoring at 18.7 points and rebounds with 10.1 per game.

Crunk, 12 points per game, and Katlyn Payne 14.4 points per game, also are in double figures.

The Panthers average 62.8 points per game, while allowing their opponents to score 67.8 points per game.

EIU is averaging 18.1 turnovers a game and forcing their opponents into an average of 12.3 points per contest.

The Lady Colonels finish up their three-game OVC road trip on Saturday when they take on Morehead State at 5:15 p.m.

EKU returns to McBrayer Arena on Jan. 18 to take on Jacksonville State.
