After the opening day of the 12th Region Tournament, the Pirates are in solid position to repeat as champions.
Both of Berea Community’s boys singles players easily advanced to the third round and the school’s top doubles team picked up two victories Friday at the Berea College Tennis Courts.
Steven Gadd, the No. 1 seed, received a first-round bye, then cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 victory. Sam Jackson also received a first-round bye and then picked up a 6-0, 6-0 victory.
Berea’s David Gadd and Nick Lykins dropped just one game in a straight-set victory in the first round, then picked up a 6-0, 7-6 (7) win in the second round.
Berea’s Christopher Robinson and Colin Weckman lost in the opening round in a third-set tiebreaker.
The Lady Pirates had only one player advance past the first round. Candace Elam defeated Madison Southern’s Carlee Mayfield, 6-0, 6-0, in her first match before suffering a 6-0, 6-0 loss in the second round.
Berea’s Emily Keyser fell in the first round, 6-1, 6-4, while the Lady Pirates doubles teams both lost in the opening round. Alexandria Horn and Ruth Ramos fell 6-2, 6-2 and Mallory Lakes and Vanessa Patel fell, 6-1, 6-1.
Madison Southern’s Ashley Erwin lost in the first round, 6-4, 5-7, 10-7.
In the boys competition, Southern’s Jason Robinson lost 6-0, 6-0 in the first round, while Gabriel Hill lost 6-0, 6-0 in the opening round.
Both of Southern’s doubles teams went out in the first round. Patrick Coyle and Andrew Parsons lost 6-1, 6-1, while Caleb Dunbar and Dennis Anthony fell, 6-0, 6-0.
The tournament continues today with matches starting at 9 a.m. at Berea College.
