H.S. SOFTBALL: Lady Eagles top Berea and Model in district doubleheader

BEREA — The Madison Southern Lady Eagles (17-7) bounced back from a tough loss to East Jessamine last week by taking both games of a doubleheader over district rivals Model (2-5) and Berea (5-12) Thursday at home.

Game 1 — Berea 10 Model 0

The Lady Eagles pounded out eight hits and took advantage of 10 Model miscues to down the Lady Patriots 10-0 in the first game.

Brook Richardson went the distance in the circle for Southern, giving up only three hits while striking out two and walking one batter.

Southern got one run in the first then scored five times on five hits and three Model errors to jump out to a 6-0 lead in the second inning.

The Lady Patriots tried to get back into the game in the top of the third, getting runners to second and third on a fielding error by Southern and a single by Kasi Schneid, but Richardson got out of the jam.

Southern got three more runs in the bottom of the third on only one hit to take a 9-0 lead, then closed out the scoring with another run in the fifth for the final score.

Briana Lanham led the way at the plate for Southern going 2-for-3 with a walk, three RBI and a stolen base.

Bethany Mays had two singles and two stolen bases, Kelly Freeman had a double and single and RBI, Taylor Johnson and Richardson picked one single each, while Alex Nash had one RBI and Jaycee Combs picked up two RBI.

Grace Weitkamp went the distance for the Lady Patriots giving up eight hits, while striking out three and walking one batter.

Game 2 — Southern 13 Berea 3

The Lady Eagles continued their hot hitting in game two, picking up nine hits — including three triples and three doubles — on the way to the 13-3, five-inning win.

Southern jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning, then added three more in the third on four consecutive hits, a triple, two doubles and a single.

Lady Eagle pitcher Emily Osborne, despite giving up four walks, carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning before the Berea bats came alive.

The Lady Pirates loaded the bases in the fifth on a single by Allie Maynard and walks to Kendra Shearer and Jenny Ingram.

Miranda Montgomery hit into a fielder’s choice bringing in Shearer to make it 8-1.

Kayla DeBorde singled to left to bring in Maynard to cut the lead to 8-2, then a Southern error on a Kayla Banther ground ball scored Ingram to make it 8-3.

Southern closed out the scoring in the bottom of the fifth, scoring five runs on three hits to make the final 13-3.

Osborne went the distance for the win, giving up only two hits, walking six and striking out two.

Jenny Ingram took the loss for Berea, giving up nine hits while striking out three and walking one.

King led the way for Southern with two singles, a double and three RBI. Combs had two triples, while Mays added a triple, Lanham and Sparks each had doubles, and Abby Nash, McKenzie Richardson and Kayla Hargis had one single each.

Southern is set to return to action Monday at home against South Laurel.

Berea is set to return to action Monday at home against Lee County.

Model is set to return to action Tuesday at Southwestern.
