OVC GOLF: EKU’s Eriksson has hole-in-one at Pinehurst

RICHMOND — Last Monday and Tuesday, the Eastern Kentucky University men’s golf team participated in the Pinehurst Intercollegiate Golf Tournament in North Carolina.

The bright spot of the event for the Colonels, who finished 14th in the 16-team field, was a hole-in-one by senior Johan Eriksson on the par 3 No. 17 on the tough Pinehurst Course No. 2.

The Colonels really struggled on this course in round two and fired a team-high total of 330. Taylor Riggs was the only player to break 80 on the tough course with a score of 79.

EKU finished with a three-round total of 931. The Colonels finished four shots behind 13th-place Villanova. Ball State, 885, captured the team total. Virginia Commonwealth, 888, and Richmond, 888, tied for second.

Taylor Riggs led EKU and tied for 36th overall in the field of 92 players. Riggs shot rounds of 75, 79 and 77 for a total of 231.

Eriksson opened with a 76 before a second round of 84. He rebounded with a 73 in round three for a total of 233 and a tie for 48th. Garrett Hinton tied for 54th with a 75, 86 and 74, 235. Stuart Witt tied for 57th with 80, 84, and best round of the Colonels —  a one over par 72 — for a total of 236.  Zack Butler tied for 70th with 79, 83, 77 for a 239 total.

The Colonels were in action yesterday and are playing today (weather permitting) in the Tennessee Tech Invitational in Sevierville, Tennessee.

May the wind be at your back, the ball bounce straight, putts run true and pick up a win for Pat.

American Stacy Lewis          now No. 1 in the world

Over the weekend, Stacy Lewis won the Founders Cup Golf Tournament in Phoenix, Az., for her seventh LPGA victory and moved to the No. 1 spot in the world ranking. She won it in spite of a two-stroke penalty called on her caddy.

This win is the second in a row for Stacy as she won in her last outing in Singapore at the Sentosa Golf Club’s Scrapong Course.

Lewis is the first American to reach this lofty position in women’s golf since Christie Kerr in October 2010. Christie held the title three times in that year for a total of five weeks. I believe Stacy Lewis will be hard to knock out of the box if she keeps playing the way she is right now.

Hang in there, Stacy, and keep it going!

Stacy Lewis is of special interest to me as she is the star pupil of my friend professional Joe Hallett. Joe was my No. 1 player on a golf team I started and coached at St. John Lutheran School in Ocala, Florida in 1977-78.

Both of you good people are tops in your class and may it stay that way for a long spell.

When insults had class

This is a hilarious e-mail from Wilson Bond and it shows that insults can have class and that you do not have to use four letter words!

“He had all the virtues I dislike and none of the vices I admire.” — Winston Churchill

“Some cause happiness wherever they go; others whenever they go.”  — Oscar Wilde

“He had delusions of adequacy.”  — Walter Kerr

A member of Parliament to Disraeli: “Sir you will either die on the gallows or of some unspeakable disease.”

“That depends,” said Disraeli, “whether I embrace your policies or your mistress.”
