H.S. SOFTBALL: Central splits pair of games in South Carolina

RICHMOND — The Madison Central softball team split a pair of games on Thursday in the final day of competition at the Cal Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

The Lady Indians (5-7) defeated Manchester (Ohio), 10-5, then lost to Olentangy (Ohio), 6-4.

Central went 2-3 in the tournament.

In the win over Manchester, the Lady Indians never trailed and used a big eight-run third inning to take control. Manchester got four runs in the fourth and one in the seventh, but was never able to get back into the game.

In the first inning, Central took the lead on a Sydney Vaughn sac fly.

In the third, Sarah Arthur had an RBI single, McKenzie Murphy scored a run and Emily Frakes and Vaughn both had RBI singles.

In the fifth, Morgan Elliston doubled and scored.

Mackenzie Wilder was 2-for-3 with an RBI, Murphy was 2-for-3, Morgan Elliston was 2-for-4, Frakes was 1-for-4 with two RBI and a run, Sammie Walczyk was 1-for-3 with a walk and a run, Kasi Schneid was 1-for-3 with an RBI, Raegan Coyle was 1-for-4 and scored twice, Vaughn was 1-for-4 with 2 RBI and a run and Arthur was 1-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.

Wilder started in the circle and went five innings, allowing five runs on nine hits with two walks. Courtney Patton pitched the final two innings and allowed just one hit while striking out two.

In the loss to Olentangy, Central scored four times in the bottom of the first two take a 4-2 lead, but was never able to push across another run, despite collecting 12 hits.

In the first inning, Coyle tripled and Arthur and Frakes had RBI singles. Elliston followed with a two-run home run.

Wilder started in the circle and went the distance, giving up 15 hits, five earned runs and had three strikeouts.

Coyle was 3-for-4, Elliston was 3-for-4, Arthur was 2-for-4, Frakes, Wilder and Murphy were all 1-for-3 and Walczyk was 1-for-4.

Central is set to return to action Wednesday at Berea.
