OVC SOFTBALL: EKU falls to South Carolina

RICHMOND — The Eastern Kentucky University softball team had just three hits and suffered an 8-0 loss to South Carolina Tuesday in Columbia, S.C.

Kayla Joyce, Christina Ciolek and Krislyn Campos had the only hits for the Colonels (9-10).

EKU trailed just 1-0 after four innings, but South Carolina scored seven times in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Leanna Pittsenbarger started and went 4 2/3 innings for the Colonels, allowing seven hits and five runs. Shaylon Robb came on in the fifth and allowed three runs on three hits without recording an out.

EKU is set to return to action Wednesday at UNC-Greensboro.

Levin leads EKU in Florida

Freshman Sofie Levin finished fourth while leading the Eastern Kentucky University women’s golf team to a fourth-place finish at the University of North Florida Intercollegiate Tuesday in Jacksonville, Fla.

The Colonels (941) finished better than three Ohio Valley Conference teams — sixth-place Morehead State (961), 12th-place Belmont (992) and 13th-place Austin Peay (1004). Western Carolina (919) captured the team title by 11 shots over Daytona State (930). North Florida (933) was third.

Levin fired rounds of 74, 79 and 74 for a 54-hole total of 227. Sophomore Rachel Welker tied for 12th overall with  a three-round total of 234.

The 14-team event was held at the par-72, 6,144-yard Jacksonville Golf & Country Club.

EKU will play in the Bobby Nichols Intercollegiate in Sevierville, Tenn., on Monday and Tuesday.

EKU takes fourth at Pinehurst

Newcomer Patric Sundlof finished second and the  Eastern Kentucky University men’s golf team placed fourth at the Pinehurst Intercollegiate.

Sundlof shot rounds of 73, 71 and 74 for a 54-hole total of 218.  He finished three shots behind individual winner Danny Pizetoski (215) from  the University of Richmond.

The Colonels (913) finished 11 shots behind third place Loyola-Maryland and four shots in front of Richmond.  UNC Greensboro (893) captured the  team title.  Belmont (899) was second.

Stuart Witt (224) tied for sixth after shooting a final round 72.

The 10-team event was contested at par-71, Pinehurst No. 8 course.

EKU will return to play on Monday and Tuesday at the Bobby Nichols Intercollegiate in Sevierville, Tenn.
