H.S. HOOPS: Lady Indians take care of business

RICHMOND — The Madison Central Lady Indians had little trouble advancing to the finals of  the 44th District Tournament Tuesday at McBrayer Arena, downing Berea Community 64-36.

The Lady Indians jumped out to a 17-7 lead after one quarter and were never threatened.

Central’s big three led the way for the Lady Indians.

Ashton Feldhaus led all scorers with 18 points, four rebounds and five assists, Shadae Bosley added 14 points and 11 rebounds, while Larryn Brooks had 13 points  four rebounds and three assists.

Berea Community was led in scoring by Jordan Sandefur with 14 points. Chase Fain also had a very good game for the Lady Pirates finishing with 11 points,  including three three-pointers, and five rebounds.

Feldhaus and Bosley scored the first seven points of the second quarter for the  Lady Indians to push the lead to 24-7.

Berea finally got on the board on a Chase Fain three pointer, her second of the  game, to cut the lead to 24-10.

Feldhaus got two quick buckets to make it 28-10 before Ashley Sizemore hit a  short jump shot to make it 28-12. Feldhaus then scored the next seven points to make it 35-12.

After a Victoria Sexton free throw, Brooks hit a bucket at the buzzer to give Central a 37-13 halftime lead.

Central coach Robbie Cooksey said he was pleased with the way his team came out in the first half and took care of business.

“We treated this like anything else. I thought we were patient compared to our last game where we took 22 threes. We only shot 10 tonight, we went inside-out first and that was something we talked about,” Cooksey said. “We wanted to get the ball in the post and we wanted to get some easy shots, we wanted to get into our press and get some layups, and we did that.”

Central outscored Berea 14-8 in the third quarter to extend its lead to 51-21 at  the end of the third quarter.

Cooksey emptied his bench early in the fourth quarter and the Lady Pirates cut  into the Central lead a little bit.

Sandefur had nine of her 14 points in a three-minute stretch as the Lady Pirates  cut the lead to 55-30 before Central pushed back out.

Berea coach Jerry Bingham said he was proud of the way his team fought even though they were outmanned.

“I thought the first four minutes (of the game) was really good. Then they went on their stretch because of some turnovers and some poor decisions by us,” Bingham said. “We talked at the half about not settling for jump shots, but trying to get the ball inside and getting some fouls. I really liked the second half because we were in much better flow on offense.”

Bailey O’Bryan finished with nine points and four rebounds, while Aryn Singer, Emily Willoughby, Lindsay Johns, Ravin Cain and Kenadee Everyly had two points each for Central.

For Berea, Hannah Haycraft finished with four points, six rebounds and one steal in her final game as a Lady Pirate, while Victoria Sexton had three points, and Holly Musick had two points and Ashley Sizemore had two points in her final appearance for Berea.

“I’m proud of my all my girls and especially proud of my two seniors. We’ve had a 19-11 season for this team and I’m proud of them,” Bingham said.

Central will play the winner of the Thursday’s Madison Southern and Model game in the championship game on Friday.
