OVC BASEBALL: Nowlin ties HR record as EKU tops Penguins

RICHMOND — Five home runs and a triple in the first two innings keyed Eastern Kentucky University’s 19-14 win over Youngstown State Tuesday at the University at Transylvania Marquard Field in Lexington.

Sophomore Kyle Nowlin tied the school record with three home runs in the game. Four others have also hit three home runs in a game.

The Colonels improved to 6-9 in 2014.

Nowlin drove the very first pitch of the bottom of the first inning over the fence in center field. Sean Hagen also had a solo homer in the inning.

With one out in the second, Doug Teegarden started an eight-run inning with a two-run shot over the right-field fence. Nowlin followed with his second home run for a 5-0 EKU lead. Freshman Ben Fisher capped the inning with a grand slam for a 10-0 advantage.

Youngstown State (2-11) scored six in the third inning highlighted by a two-run single by Josh White.

After a lead-off double by Teegarden in the bottom of the fifth, Nowlin hit his third homer over the fence in center field again. That scored two of the five runs the Colonels pushed across to go on top 15-7.

Nowlin went 3-for-5 with three runs, four RBIs and a walk. Teegarden had three hits in five at bats, scored twice and drove in a pair. Hagen  finished 2-for-4, scored three times, drove in two, walked once and had a stolen base.

Trailing 19-7, the Penguins added seven more in the eighth. This time two-run doubles by Phil Lipari and Alex Larivee fueled the big inning for YSU.

Ben Brooks (1-0) earned the win after tossing two innings in relief. He allowed one run on four hits, struck out two and did not walk a batter.

Davis Saluga had a 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs for Youngstown State. White was 2-for-5 with a run and two RBIs.

Weather permitting, the Colonels and Penguins will conclude their two-game series today. The game time has been changed to noon.
