GLENMORE: Looking forward to golf weather

RICHMOND — I think its about time for old Mother Nature to lighten up and let us get on with spring, golf and gardens.

I am so thankful I made it through the winter and have a chance to bring you one more year of local golf news, special thanks to the Man upstairs.

The only golf action locally so far has been both the men and women golf teams at EKU. The EKU men opened it’s 2014 season on Feb. 11 with a fourth-place finish at the Mid-American Match Play hosted by Ball State in Dade City, Fla. The eight-team event was contested at the Lake Jovita South Course, which is a par 72, 7,153 yard course.

Junior newcomer Patric Sundlof won all three of his matches. He beat Toledo’s Mike Lancaster 5 and 3.  He then downed Eastern Michigan’s Josh Heinze. Sundlof finished with a victory of Xavier’s Tanapol Vattanapisit.

You da man, Patric!

Freshman Travis Rose had a win against Toledo. Junior Taylor Riggs had wins against Toledo and Xavier.

EKU beat Toledo in the first round. The Colonels fell to Eastern Michigan in the semifinals. Eastern concluded play with a loss to Xavier on Tuesday in the third-place match.

Ball State captured the title by beating Eastern Michigan in the finals.

Last Tuesday (March 4), the EKU men finished 11th in the Samford Intercollegiate in Hoover, Ala. The 16-team event was contested at the Hoover Country Club, a par 72, 7,001 yard course.

EKU improved each round, going from a 322 on Monday, to a 309 second-round score and concluding play on Tuesday with a 303 in the third round. The 54-hole total of 934 was four shots behind 10th-place Bowling Green and three shots in front of 12th-place Western Carolina.

South Alabama captured the team title with a total of 891. Alabama-Birmingham (893) was second and Campbell (906) was third.

Taylor Riggs and Patric Sundlof led EKU with identical totals of 234, 18 shots over par. The two tied for 35th overall. Garrett Hinton (238) tied for 49th. Stuart Witt (241) and Daniel DeLuca (241) tied for 59th overall.

The Colonels will return to action at the three-day Pinehurst Intercollegiate this week.

The EKU women kicked off their 2014 season Feb. 24 with a sixth-place finish in the 12th-annual South Alabama Women Invitational, played at the par 72, 6,071 yard Azalea City Golf Club in Mobile, Ala.

As a team, EKU finished with rounds of 309, 305 and 305 for a total of 919.  Memphis (905) captured the team title followed by Jacksonville State (907) in second. USA was third with 909, Troy (915) fourth and Samford (918) fifth.

Sophomore Rachel Welker led the Colonels by firing three straight rounds of 75. This tied Welker for seventh overall with a career-best 54-hole total of 225.

Sofie Levin and Anna Gleixner posted top 25 finishes in a field of 83 players. Levin carded rounds of 78, 76, and 77 for a total of 231, tied for 20th. Gleixner had round of 76, 82, and 74 for a total of 232. Gleixner’s 74 round was the lowest round by a Colonel at the event. Becky Sharp tied for 41st with a 238 and Emilie Simmons tied for 53rd with 242.

EKU is back in action today at the North Florida Intercollegiate in Jacksonville, FL.

Good luck ladies!

Congratulations, Rachel.
