A championship and a trip to state was decided in the final two matches Saturday between Anderson County and Madison Central.
The Indians needed to win at least one of the final two matches — and they won both.
Jack Lindsey claimed a win by pin at the 160 weight class and Storm Savage had a pin victory at 170 to help Central defeat Anderson County, 47-32.
With the win, the Indians completed a perfect 4-0 performance at the Section 4 State Qualifying Duals.
The victory earns Central a spot in the 2014 State Duals on Feb. 1 at Montgomery County. Only the top 16 teams advance to the state meet.
“Everyone has done really well this year,” Central coach John Wes Watts said. We started off a little slow. We had a lot of new guys. A lot of eighth and ninth graders on the team. We are real young. This was supposed to be a learning year, but they looking like a really strong team. We are starting to develop a strong program.”
Central defeated Barren County, 60-21, beat Nelson County, 46-21, and defeated Thomas Nelson, 68-11.
The Indians had four wrestlers go undefeated in the event. Ryan McMannis (122 pounds — 4-0), Chris Morrow (134 pounds — 4-0), Savage (3-0) and Will Keeney (108 pounds, 3-0).
Logan Thomas (heavyweight) and Lindsey both went 3-1, while Drake Hager (140 pounds) and Daniel Baker (147 pounds) were 2-1 on the day.
“It was a strong performance from everyone,” Watts said. “Even the kids who lost, tried real hard and went down fighting.”
Against Anderson County, the Indians had to forfeit points in three weight classes, but still got enough points to pick up the win.
Thomas, Keeney and McMannis all won by pins before Shane Harvey lost.
Morrow and Baker both won by pin, but Gavin Williams lost, setting up a must-win for Central.
Lindsay battled into the third round of the match before getting a win by pin that secured the victory and a trip to state.
“That one sealed it,” Watts said. “If he would have lost it would have come down to (the last match). It was a really exciting match.”
