H.S. BASKETBALL: Lady Pirates, Patriots pick up wins, Lady Eagles, Pirates fall

RICHMOND — The Lady Pirates (5-6) had little trouble picking up a win Saturday at home over Beth Haven.

Chase Fain had a game-best 16 points and Jordan Sandefur added 12 points, seven steals and five assists as Berea Community earned a 63-22 victory. Teressa Kidwell scored 10 points and added four points off the bench.

Berea took a 19-4 lead after the first quarter and was up 40-17 at halftime.

“Our girls came out strong,” Berea coach Jennifer Cornett said. “Boxing out has been a weakness of ours this year and we are doing all the right things to correct that. We made a team goal to limit opposing teams to 10 or less offensive rebounds. We gave Central way too many second-chance points (Friday night). Our girls were in position to help off of penetration and our backside guard did an excellent job dropping to grab the backside rebound. We had several players step up and play well for us today.”

Conner Coyle scored seven points and had seven rebounds off the bench and also helped contain Beth Haven’s best rebounder.

Victoria Sexton had six points, Alex Horn had three points, while Miranda Montgomery, McKenzie Perry and Della Walters had two points each.

Berea is set to return to action Tuesday at home against Red Bird.

Model hammers Bracken County

The Patriots got off to a fast start and rolled to an easy victory Saturday at home over Bracken County (8-5).

Model Laboratory (10-3) built an 18-point lead in the first quarter and went on to pick up a 95-65 win. Sophomore guard Ephriam Otieno had a team-best 31 points and four other Patriots reached double figures in scoring.

“They played the best defense that we’ve played in a quarter all year,” Model coach Wes Scarberry said.

The game was tied 4-4 in the opening minutes. After a timeout, Model took complete control, putting together an 18-0 run.

At the end of the first quarter, the Patriots were up 26-9. At halftime, they were on top 47-33.

Jared Adams had 17 points (11 in the third quarter), Keith Mason had 16 points, Zack Rice-Gordon had 15 points (10 in the first quarter) and Caleb Kincaid had 11 points.

Alex Chen and Chase Mohallatee had two points each and James Logue had one point.

Model is set to return to action Monday at Nicholas County.
