H.S. HOOPS: Model opens season with big victory

RICHMOND — The Patriots opened the season with an very impressive road win Tuesday over Monticello.

Model Laboratory opened the game on a 9-0 run and rolled to a 74-37 victory. The Patriots had a 32-2 lead after the first quarter.

“Our seniors were really focused when they hit the floor,” Model coach Wes Scarberry said.

Model had four players reach double figures in scoring. A.J. Hammons had 15 points, Anthony Gerald had 12 points and four steals, Jon Ballard had 12 points and five rebounds and Brendon Hill had 10 points and five steals.

Zack Rice-Gordon added eight points, Jesse Middleton had six points and Jared Adams added four points.

Model forced 19 turnovers in the first half and had a 54-17 lead at halftime.

The Patriots are set to return to action Friday at Sayre.

Barbourville 61, Berea 39

The Lady Pirates opened the season with a 61-39 loss Tuesday at Barbourville.

Berea Community is set to return to action today at the Kentucky School for the Deaf.
