OVC FOOTBALL: Colonels set for annual spring game

RICHMOND — The EKU football team will wrap up spring practice season today with  the annual Maroon-White Spring Game at Roy Kidd Stadium.

Admission to the game free.

Game time is 4 p.m.

Rising junior Jared McClain will be the featured quarterback for the Maroon squad. McClain saw action in all 11 games last year with starts against Kansas State, Coastal Carolina and Jacksonville State.

His most productive game as a sophomore came on Nov. 3 at Southeast Missouri when he completed eight-of-11 passes for 138 yards. McClain also scored two rushing touchdowns in the 31-7 victory against the Redhawks.

Joining McClain on the Maroon team are senior defensive lineman Shawn Shupperd and junior defensive back Brandon Stanley — both All-OVC selections in 2012.

Shupperd led the Colonels in quarterback hurries (16) while Stanley posted a team-high 81 tackles from the safety position.

Redshirt freshman Kyle Romano heads up the White team at quarterback. Romano, from Bedford, Texas, did not play in 2012, but was a Rivals.com two-star recruit out of L.D. Bell High  School.

A pair of up-and-coming running backs will share the backfield with Romano — redshirt freshmen J.J. Jude and Thomas Owens. Also lining up with the White squad will be senior linebacker Ichiro Vance, a two-time All-OVC selection.

The game will be played and scored as a typical college football game with the Colonels split evenly in half. The only changes involve special teams where punts will be downed at the result  of the punt and all drives following kick-offs will start at the 30-yard line regardless of the result of those plays.

The game will be live audio streamed for free on the OVC Digital Network.

The Colonels held their final two spring workouts Tuesday and Thursday at Roy Kidd Stadium.

Last Saturday, the team traveled to Hazard to play host to a kids clinic and hold a scrimmage.

Almost 50 kids attended the kids’ clinic in Hazard, which was conducted by the EKU coaching staff and select players who did not dress for the scrimmage.

Lots of fresh faces made big plays during the Hazard scrimmage.

Redshirt freshman Jared Sanders notched a 60-yard run for a touchdown. Also on offense, sophomore wide out Jeff Glover hauled in numerous big catches.
