GOLF: Witt finishes fifth at state amateur

RICHMOND — Richmond native Stuart Witt posted a +1, 73, Thursday in the final round of the 102nd Kentucky State Amateur Championship at the Bowling Green Club.

Witt, a former Madison Central golfer and senior on the EKU golf team, finished with a three-round total of 215 (-1) and tied for fifth place.

Tyler McDaniel of Manchester ran away with the title, posting a   -13, 203. Patrick Newcomb of Benton was second at -7, 209, while Matthew Zakutney of Paducah was third at -6, 210 and Karsten Clements of Fisherville was fourth at -2, 214.

Witt shot a 73 in the first round, then jumped up to sixth place Wednesday after shooting a -3, 69 in the second round.

Witt tied for fifth place with Taylor Thompson of Anchorage.

EKU junior Taylor Riggs shot a 79 in the third round and finished with a total score of +11, 227. He tied for 52nd.

EKU sophomores Garrett Hinton and Ben Purcell finished tied for 81st with scores of +13, 229.

Nowlin finishes fourth

Richmond’s Tristyn Nowlin finished fourth in the girls 13-15 year-old division Thursday at the Kentucky PGA Junior Championship Qualifier at the Bardstown County Club.

Nowlin posted a second-round score of 76, six strokes better than her first-round mark from Wednesday (82).

She finished at +14, 158, and was just three strokes behind the second-place finisher, Lauren Hartlage of Elizabethtown.

Mary Joiner of Franklin took the title at +3, 147.

Nowlin’s score also gave her an eighth-place finish in the girls overall competition.

Richmond’s Mason Hamrick shot a 51 on Thursday and finished seventh in the boys 12-and-under division.

Hamrick finished with a two-round score of +23, 95.
