Several golfers with local connections are still in the hunt for a title after the first day of the 102nd Kentucky Amateur Championships.
Stuart Witt, a former Madison Central golfer and a senior at EKU, shot a +1, 73, on Tuesday at the Bowling Green Country Club and is tied for 19th.
EKU senior Garrett Hinton shot a +3, 75, and is tied for 45th.
Clay Hinton of Elizabethtown is in first place after the first round after shooting a -6, 66. Patrick Newcombe of Benton is one stroke back, while Tyler McDaniel of Manchester is two strokes off the pace.
EKU sophomore Ben Purcell is tied for 75th (77), EKU junior Taylor Riggs is tied for 92nd (78), Richmond’s Brad Newnam is tied for 104th (79), EKU sophomore Daniel DeLuca is tied for 117th (80), Richmond’s Adam Herald is tied for 127th (81) and EKU sophomore Kyle Congleton is 155th (92).
The second round of the three-round event is scheduled for today. The field of 156 golfers will be cut to the top 70 after the second round.
