H.S. BASKETBALL: Patriots down Pineville, Lady Patriots fall short

Register Staff Report

RICHMOND — The Model Laboratory Patriots (15-7) picked up their second win in two nights, 54-45, Saturday over Pineville on the road.

Model went wire-to-wire for the victory.

The Patriots jumped out to a 15-7 lead after one quarter. They extended it to 48-29 at the half.

They took control of the game in the third quarter, outscoring the Mountain Lions 17-8 to go up 45-26 after three quarters.

Model coach Wes Scarberry said his team was patient against the Pineville zone, something it had struggled with earlier in the season.

“Two of our biggest concerns this year have been our half-court offense and half-court defense and we did them both great today,” Scarberry said. “They played a zone, which a lot of teams have done lately, and we were patient against it. We didn’t rush shots, we ran our sets patiently and played under control. I’m really proud of the way we played against their zone.”

Pineville got a few three pointers early in the fourth quarter, to creep a little closer, but Model won going away.

The Patriots got very balanced scoring for the second consecutive night.

Zack Rice-Gordon and Jared Adams led the way with 13 points each. Caleb Kincaid had a good night in the paint, finishing with 11 points. Ephraim Otieno had seven points, Alex Chen had six points and Keith Mason had four points.

“We had good balance tonight. That’s another thing we’ve talked about a lot, playing more as a team and less as individuals. The last two nights we’ve done a good job of sharing the basketball. We had 18 assists last night and 16 assists tonight,” Scarberry said. “Things are really coming together. I think we grew up a lot in those four games we lost. We knew those games in that stretch were going to be tough, but that’s why we played them in preparation for the district on Feb. 25.”

The Patriots return to action on Tuesday when they host Bath County.

Lady Patriots 58, Wolfe County 69

The Model Laboratory Lady Patriots (7-14) got another huge game from senior Darrian Botts, but it wasn’t enough as they fell to Wolfe County 69-58.

Botts tallied 38 points on the night, one game after dropping 39 points on Madison Southern. The senior was 14-of-33 from the field and 10-of-15 from the free throw line. She also had four steals and one blocked shot.

Haley Hunt was also in double figures with 10 points, while Abby Vicars had six points and Mia Akande added four points.

Model got off to a good start, taking a 17-16 advantage after one quarter.

Wolfe County out-scored the Lady Patriots 20-13 in the second quarter to take a 36-30 lead at the half.

The Lady Patriots hung close, trailing by 52-45 after three quarters, but Wolfe County outscored them 17-13 in the fourth quarter to go on for the win.

Model is back in action on Tuesday when they host Williamsburg on Tuesday.
