The Colonels (16-7, 7-3 OVC) step out of Ohio Valley Conference play today for the final time this season when they play host to UT Chattanooga (15-9, 9-1 SoCon) at 7 p.m. in McBrayer Arena.
EKU will be seeking its 22nd consecutive non-conference home win. EKU won 21 straight between 1977-78 and 1980-81. The Colonels are 43-7 in home non-conference games under coach Jeff Neubauer.
EKU is coming off a heart-stopping, last-second win over Southeast Missouri State on Thursday.
Glenn Cosey’s banked-in three-pointer with less than a second remaining gave EKU the dramatic come-from-behind win.
The Colonels were struggling to score when Neubauer switched to a five-guard lineup with four minutes to go and EKU down 10.
Orlando Williams lit a fire under the Colonels by hitting back-to-back three pointers in a 30 second span. Marcus Lewis made it three three-pointers in a row to get the Colonels within two points.
Lewis had a monster slam dunk inside the game’s final minute to set up Cosey’s heroics.
Chattanooga started the season 4-8 before getting things together. The Mocs are coming off a 67-52 loss to Furman on Thursday which broke a 10-game winning streak.
Chattanooga is led by Z. Mason who enters the game scoring 19.1 points per game and a team-best 9-5 rebounds per game. He is one of three Mocs averaging double figures.
Casey Jones comes in at 12.3 points per game, while Ronrico White averages 11.6 points per game.
Chattanooga averages 76.9 points per game and allows their opponents to score 73.7 points per contest.
The Colonels average 78.9 points per game, second best in the OVC, and allow an average of 69.8 points per game, also second best in the conference.
EKU has committed 149 fewer turnovers than their opponents on the season and have outscored the opposition by 215 points off those turnovers.
Chattanooga has committed 2.2 fewer turnovers than its opponents.
Cosey named OVC Player of the Week
Eastern Kentucky University senior guard Glenn Cosey was chosen as the adidas Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Week on Monday, the league announced from its Brentwood, Tenn., headquarters. Cosey hit a 37-foot three-pointer with 0.4 seconds left to give Eastern a 79-78 victory over Southeast Missouri.
The shot, which completed a comeback from 10-points down with 3:57 left, earned the No. 1 spot on SportsCenter’s Top-10 Plays.This is the second time this season, and in his two-year career, that the Flint, Mich., native has been chosen OVC Player of the Week.
The Colonels will play their final regular season non-conference game on Tuesday against Chattanooga.Tip-off at McBrayer Arena is scheduled for 7 p.m.
Cosey finished with 20 points, three assists, two rebounds and two steals against Southeast Missouri on Saturday.
