The Lady Colonels (12-8, 6-3 OVC) ran into a buzzsaw Monday in the form of the OVC’s leading scorer — Heather Butler.
Butler poured in a career-high 44 points to lead league-leading UT-Martin (17-6, 10-0 OVC) to an 87-65 blowout of EKU in McBrayer Arena.
The Lady Colonels came out in the match-up of division leaders a little shaky, committing turnovers on their first five possessions. EKU finished with 20 turnovers in the game — 15 in the first half — which allowed the Skyhawks to blow out to a 45-24 halftime lead.
EKU played much better in the second half, only getting outscored by a single point, but the first half deficit was just too big to climb out of.
Marie Carpenter led the way for the Lady Colonels with 24 points. She also pulled down five rebounds had two assists and two steals.
Pilar Walker and Jasmine Henshaw finished with 10 points each. Henshaw had her best game of the season, matching a career high scoring. She pulled down seven rebounds, also matching a career-best.
Jasmine Stafford also had one of her best performances of the year, finishing with nine points, five rebounds, four assists and a steal.
EKU fell behind 9-2 before outscoring the Skyhawks 10-1 to take a 12-10 advantage.
Martin then went on an 18-2 run behind the outside shooting of Butler to go up 28-14 on their way to the big halftime lead.
Behind Carpenter’s 14 points, the Lady Colonels battled back to get to within 13, 72-59, with less than seven minutes to play, but the Skyhawks pulled away for the easy victory.
Shelly Harper finished with six points, nine rebounds and two assists, while Miranda Maples had four points, three rebounds, one assist and two blocked shots and Nicole Bowers had two points.
The Lady Colonels return to action on Saturday when they host rival Morehead State at 1 p.m.
