OVC HOOPS: EKU set for tough challenge

RICHMOND — The Lady Colonels are looking to bounce back after two losses in the San Juan Shootout over the Thanksgiving weekend, but the task will be a tough one.

EKU (3-2) travels to Louisville today to take on the 7-0 Louisville Cardinals, who are ranked No. 6 in the USA Today/ESPN WBCA Coaches poll and No. 7 in Associated Press poll this week.

EKU is coming off a tough 68-64 loss to Milwaukee in Puerto Rico in which it held a 62-60 lead with just over a minute to play before Milwaukee hit six free throws in the final minute to pull out the win.

The Cardinals are coming off a 79-61 road win over OVC West favorite UT Martin on Monday. They also own wins over Eckerd College, Texas A&M, Portland, Central Florida, Gonzaga, Oregon State and Austin Peay.

Shoni Schimmel leads the cards in scoring and assists with 13.4 points and 4.9 assists a game.

The Cardinals average 74.4 points per game with an average winning margin of 22.4 points per contest. Louisville is shooting 47.7 percent from the floor, while holding its opponents to 36 percent shooting.

The Lady Colonels, the best rebounding team in the OVC — led by Jade Barber whose 11.4 rebounds per game rank 19th in the country — will once again face a tough test on the boards against Louisville, which is averaging 40.7 rebounds per game and holds a rebounding margin over their opponents of 10 boards a game.

Former Rockcastle County star Sara Hammond, the second-leading scorer for the Cards at 11.3 points per game, is Louisville’s best rebounder, averaging 8.3 boards per game.

EKU is ranked 24th in the country in blocked shots per game with an average of 5.6 per game.

The Lady Colonels are 13-18 all-time against Louisville, last beating the Cardinals 71-68 in Richmond in 1990.

Louisville won the last meeting between the teams, Nov. 11 , 2011, 77-53, in a game the Lady Colonels led by a point at the half.

The Lady Colonels return home this weekend when they will play Presbyterian Friday at 7 p.m. in the Comfort Suites Invitational.
