H.S. BASKETBALL: Sayre handles Berea, 64-32 in All "A"

RICHMOND — The Pirates simply couldn’t recover from a disastrous start Thursday in the semifinals of the 11th Region All “A” Classic in Frankfort.

Sayre scored the first 13 points of the game and rolled to a 64-32 win over Berea Community (5-13). The Spartans had a 24-2 advantage in the first quarter and went on to build a 42-point lead.

Austin Warford had nine points, four rebounds and two assists to lead Berea. Dustin Kates added eight points and Bradley Atkins had seven points.

The Pirates didn’t score until a Shyiem Alexander basket with 3:49 left in the first quarter. They were unable to score again until their was just 1:32 left in the period.

Berea trailed 43-16 at halftime.

The Pirates were just 1-of-6 from the free throw line and shot only 35 percent from the field (14-of-40) for the game.

Sayre out-scored the Pirates 30-10 in the paint and scored 16 points off 15 turnovers.

Cameron Coyle had four points, while Alexander and Jarel Tevis had two points each.

Sayre advances to the championship game, which is scheduled for Saturday in Frankfort. The Spartans will take on the winner of the other semifinal — Model or Lexington Christian Academy — which is set to be played tonight in Frankfort.

Game time is set for 8 p.m.

Model beat LCA in last year’s championship game.

Danville 77, Madison Southern 68

For the second game in a row, the Madison Southern Eagles dug themselves an early hole they were never able to overcome.

On Tuesday night, the Eagles fell behind visiting East Jessamine 42-12 and ended up losing, 89-84.

On Thursday in Danville, the Eagles fell behind the Admirals 10-0 and never could get over the hump, falling on the road, 77-68.

Southern got back to within 19-16 by the end of the first quarter. Danville stretched its lead to 33-24 at the half, were up 54-44 after three quarters and never let the Eagles get any closer the rest of the way.

Unlike Tuesday when the Eagles made big stops when they needed them as they erased the big lead, against Danville mistakes at inopportune times killed a rally each time.

Although the Eagles only committed 13 turnovers in the game, Southern assistant coach Brian Reppert said it was when they came that was the problem.

“Tonight we put together some good runs, but then we would have an unforced error that stopped them,” Reppert said. “Thirteen is not bad for a game, but they always seemed to come after we made a run. We just weren’t executing and capitalizing on opportunities.”

Trevor Huff led the way for the Eagles with 19 points and seven rebounds before fouling out. Caleb Miller added 14 points, all in the second half, Stacy Burns had 12 points on the night while also battling foul trouble.

Andrew Miller had six points, Tanner Kidwell had six points as well, but had a good all-around floor game, finishing with eight assists and seven rebounds.
