H.S. HOOPS: Western Hills pulls away from Lady Patriots

RICHMOND — The Lady Patriots have struggled at times through the first month of the season.

But, that’s not too surprising.

With just one senior in a lineup filled with mostly middle schoolers, Model has one of the youngest teams in the state.

The Lady Patriots are, however, showing signs of improvement.

Model put together a solid first half Tuesday in Richmond before Western Hills pulled away for a 66-48 win. The Lady Patriots (4-10) trailed by just seven points at halftime, before the Lady Wolverines out-scored them 21-13 in the third quarter.

Senior Darrian Botts led Model with 25 points and seven rebounds. Abby Vicars had 12 points and junior Hayley Hunt added 10 points.

“We’ve been improving,” first-year Model coach Bobbie Storie said. “We’ve been doing a lot better. In our last three games we’ve eliminated a lot of little stuff. But, we’ve still got a long way to go. We are still young. You have to keep things in perspective. Three of my top six players are middle schoolers.”

The Lady Patriots suffered a hard-fought loss to district rival Berea, 57-50, but bounced back on Saturday with a solid road win over Whitefield Academy.

In that win, Vicars hit five three-pointer and finished with 22 points. On Tuesday, the freshman had four more three-pointers.

“Abby has been playing well,” Storie said. “The past few games she’s been really good — offensively and defensively.”

Model trailed 50-35 after three quarters against Western Hills. Led by Botts, the Lady Patriots were able to get back within 10 points in the fourth quarter.

But, Hunt fouled out and the Lady Wolverines were able to push their lead to 20 points.

Botts was nine-of-13 from the free throw line and Model was 15-of-21 from the line and five-of-10 from three-point range.

“I can’t fault the effort,” Storie said. “They gave a great effort.”

Model is set to return to action Saturday at home against Jackson County.
