LITTLE LEAGUE: American Legion tops Marlins to take Senior League Championship

RICHMOND — The American Legion Cardinals jumped out to an early lead and cruised to a 14-2 five-inning victory Monday over the Sigma Alpha Epsilon Marlins in the championship game of the Richmond Little League Senior League Tournament at Turkey Hughes Field.

The Cardinals scored twice in the first inning and added six more runs in the third and four more runs in the fourth to secure a championship for veteran coach Tommy Barnett.

In the top of the first, Drew Harmon scored a run, Mason Crump had a double and scored a run and Zack Collins added an RBI single.

The Marlins cut that lead in half in the bottom of the inning. Austin Bettlestone singled and scored, while Trey Eden had an RBI single.

In the top of the third, Daniel Wilkerson had an RBI single, Crump added an RBI double, Justin Ferris drew a bases-loaded walk, Collins stole home, Lucas Stamper put down a perfect suicide squeeze bunt and Ashton Scott scored on a wild pitch.

In the top of the fourth, Wilkerson singled, Tanner Thornsberry pushed across a run with a groundout, Ferris added an RBI single and two more runs scored on an error.

 In the bottom of the fifth, Bettlestone picked up an RBI when he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

Scott picked up the five-inning, complete-game victory for the Cardinals.

After the game, the members of both senior league and junior league All-Stars were announced.

The 2013 Richmond Senior League All-Stars include: Will Daniel and Nash Courtwright (Air Economics), Drew Harmon, Ashton Scott and Daniel Wilkerson (American Legion), Tenny Akihary (Bluegrass Transportation), Zachary McPeek (Get Fit), Drake Coomer, Easten Shouse and Dalton Ward (Northside Equipment) and Michael Kendrick and Jonathan Ross (SAE - Sigma Alpha Epsilon).

The 2013 Richmond Junior League All-Stars include: Evan Courtwright, Drew Gibbons, Max Purvis and Denton Witt (Air Economics), Alec Rogers (American Legion), Cameron Berry (Bluegrass Transportation), Austin Adams, Jackson Hurt, Jason Hurt and Gavin Williams (Get Fit), Jeffery Villanacci (Northside Equipment) and Brandon Huntzinger (SAE - Sigma Alpha Epsilon).
