H.S. FOOTBALL: Southern’s Harris de-commits

BEREA — Madison Southern junior running back Damien Harris on Tuesday withdrew his commitment to the University of Michigan and reopened his recruitment.

Madison Southern football coach Jon Clark confirmed Tuesday afternoon that Harris was looking at all his options, but the Wolverines are still in the mix and “Michigan is still his top school.”

In an interview with the Louisville Courier-Journal on Tuesday, Harris’ mother, Lynn Harris, also confirmed her son had de-committed, but declined to say what path his recruitment would take going forward.

According to the Courier-Journal, Lynn Harris told affiliate that “Michigan is No. 1, and that hasn’t changed. (He) just wants to make sure that he doesn’t have any regrets when he gets ready to enroll.”

Fans of both the University of Kentucky and the University of Louisville have expressed online that the announcement could be good news for the Wildcats and Cardinals, who have expressed interest in Harris all along.

But, Lynn Harris told the Courier Journal that “They’ll probably be in the mix somewhere at some point since this news has come out.”

She also said coaches from neither school have visited Harris in the past week.

Harris, a five-star recruit has been ranked as the No. 5 overall prospect in the class of 2015. He is also the top ranked running back in the class.

He was named the 2013-14 Gatorade Player of the Year in December and was selected to the Associated Press All-State team in January.
