BOWLING: Jones Jr. almost hits 300 again

RICHMOND — Lewis Jones, Jr. fell just short of bowling his fourth career 300 game with a 298 score in the TGIF League last Friday. He opened the second game in his series with 11 strikes, but left two pins with his last ball.

Jones Jr. has bowled two 300 games at Galaxy (April 2010 and March 2013) and one at the Maroon Lanes (June 1994).

His father, Lewis Jones Sr., has bowled two 300 games at the Maroon Lanes (June 1992 and August (1994).

League highlights

Galaxy Classic

Mike Riley (267), Brandon Simpson (257), Ron Gugel (257) and Barry Miller (256) bowled the best games on Monday.

Simpson bowled the high series at 734. Lewis Jones Jr. followed his 298 game in the TGIF League on Friday with a 707 series in this league.

A 600 series was rolled by Gugel (685), Randy Burgess (682), Miller (671), Ron Roberts (659), Shawn Barton (658), John Hickam (650), Aaron Rose (642), Robby Bales (636), Glenn Masters (632), Riley (622), J.J. Reisig (621), Gary Cromer (620), Bill Bowles (610), Steve Woltering (608) and Mark Rogers (602).

Regina Barton rolled the high women’s game (233) and series (562). Chris Collins bowled a 515 series.

Galaxy Girls

Shella Cobb (199) and Tiara Holt (196) bowled the high games Tuesday night. Cobb also bowled the best series (530), followed by Mary Mink and Narita Rose at 486 each.

Splits were converted by Brenda Marcum (2-10). Linda Combs (4-9), Jelemia Sanders (5-10) and Carole Bales (5-7).


Lewis Jones Jr. led this league with the 298 game noted at the top of this column, and he rolled the second-best series for league members with a 669 score.

The high series for league members was 683 by Ron Gugel, while the second-high game was 254 by Bill Bowles.

Substitute Brandon Simpson bowled a 256 game and 706 series.

A 600 series was also bowled by Steve Woltering (636), Merle Meade (628), Bowles (625) and Glenn Masters (608).

Narita Rose led the league’s ladies with a 206 game and 573 series. Novel Davis bowled the second-best women’s game (189), and she tied Sandy Reynolds for the second-high women’s series at 518.
