OVC FOOTBALL: Tradition leads Canady to EKU

RICHMOND — Jeffrey Canady turned in one of the best four years as a football player at Knox Central High School and it paid off Thursday with Canady signing a letter of intent to play football for Eastern Kentucky University.

Canady chose the Colonels over Air Force, Penn and Wofford.

“This is great just knowing that you can do something from this area when a lot of people don’t expect you to,” Canady said. “I’ve been able to prove a lot of people wrong and this shows this area has a lot of good players.”

Canady was quick to point out why he chose Eastern Kentucky University.

“Tradition,” he said. “Both of my uncles and my aunt played there and my uncle (Mark) was an All-American there and it really feels like home. My cousin goes there and it’s just like a family atmosphere.”

Canady, the Times-Tribune Player of the Year last season, put up impressive career numbers during his four years at Knox Central — 83 touchdowns, 4,048 rushing yards in three years, 2,428 receiving yards, 7,447 all-purpose yards, 16 interceptions, 271 tackles and an average of 46 yards per punt. He hopes to continue the success at Eastern Kentucky.

“I will be redshirting next year and it gives me the opportunity to know the defense,” he said. “That way when I come in, I’ll be full go to step in and play. I’ll be playing outside linebacker and possibly running back. I just want to make the best of it. I just want to continue to do what I did in high school.”
