RICHMOND — For the sixth-straight year, the 44th District basketball tournaments will feature the same pairings.

Madison Central will face Berea Community on Tuesday, Feb. 19, while Madison Southern and Model Laboratory will meet in the other semifinals on Thursday, Feb. 21.

The championship games are set for Friday, Feb. 22.

All games will be played at EKU’s McBrayer Arena.

Madison Central has dominated district tournament play recently, sweeping both the boys and girls titles the past five seasons.

The Indians have won 17 straight championships and will enter this year’s tournament as the heavy favorite once again. Central (19-4) has the best record in the 11th Region.

The Lady Indians (21-3) also have the best record in the 11th Region and are currently riding a seven-game winning streak.

Last year, Model and Madison Southern played an epic game in the boys semifinals. The Eagles (14-9) won in overtime, 72-63, before falling to Central in the finals.

The teams have met once so far this season, with Model (19-6) claiming a 56-54 win in Richmond.

Berea (7-17) has not played Central this season and fell to the Indians in last year’s 44th District semifinals, 79-30.

Southern (10-16) slipped past Model (5-17) in last year’s girls district semifinal, 61-53. The Lady Eagles went on to lose to Central in the title game, 61-41.

Model and Southern have played twice this season with the Lady Eagles winning both games — 63-42 in Berea and 74-39 in Richmond.

Berea (14-9) has not played Central this season and lost to the Lady Indians in last year’s 44th District semifinal, 81-38.
