H.S. HOOPS: Berea rolls past Alice Lloyd, 96-83

RICHMOND — The Mountaineers used a big first half to snap a two-game skid Tuesday at the Seabury Center.

Berea College shot 60 percent in the opening half and rolled to a 96-83 win over Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference rival Alice Lloyd. Tevin Webster had 26 points and 18 rebounds, while former Madison Southern standout Aaron Ponder had 18 points, seven rebounds and seven assists.

The Mountaineers (14-9, 6-2 KIAC)  opened conference play with six straight wins before falling last week on the road to Indiana University-Southeast (18-3, 8-0) and Indiana University-East (15-8, 5-3).

By sweeping the regular-season series with Alice Lloyd, Berea remains in second place in the KIAC. The Mountaineers defeated the Eagles Jan. 8, 72-69, in overtime on the road.

Berea raced out to a 54-35 halftime lead and despite shooting 38 percent in the second half, never allowed Alice Lloyd to get back in the game.

Koty Riley had 14 points, Seth Beckham had 10 points and five assists, while Rashad Hayden had eight points.

Berea is set to return to action Saturday at Brescia.

Lady Mountaineers 50, Alice Lloyd 43

Johnesha Warren had a double-double, 11 points and 10 rebounds, as Berea College defeated KIAC rival Alice Lloyd Tuesday at the Seabury Center.

The Lady Mountaineers (8-14, 4-5 KIAC) trailed 21-16 at halftime, but used 48 percent shooting in the second half to rally for the win. Malena Steve had 10 points and four rebounds, Shelby Romine had eight points and five rebounds and Anna Loveless had eight points and six rebounds.

Berea has won four of its past five games.

The Lady Mountaineers were 0-of-13 from three-point range, but limited Alice Lloyd to 29 percent shooting for the game and forced 23 turnovers.

Former Madison Central standout Erika Parks had six points and three rebounds and Makenzie Stoner had four points.

Berea shot 19 percent (six-of-31) in the first half.

Former EKU guard Carla Booth had five points for Alice Lloyd on three-of-22 shooting.

Berea is set to return to action Saturday at Brescia.
