BOWLING: Simpson just misses another 300 game

RICHMOND — Brandon Simpson just missed bowling the third 800 series of his career with a 795 score in the TGIF League last Friday. Simpson has rolled two of the seven 800 series which have been bowled at Galaxy since it opened in 2001.

A 700 series was also bowled this week by Mark Rogers (759), Ron Gugel (730) and Randy Burgess (706).

Simpson and Rogers tied for the high game for the week at 279.

Sara Zuercher bowled the high women’s game (237) and series (583) at Galaxy this week.

Lemetta Dause Memorial Tournament

The Lemetta Dause Memorial Tourney is set for 2 p.m. Sunday. Proceeds will be donated to Hospice Care Plus.

All bowlers are invited to participate in this tournament, which will use the 3-6-9 and no-tap formats. Bowlers are awarded free strikes in the third, sixth and ninth frames and nine pins down with the first ball in a frame counts as a strike.

The entry fee is $20 to bowl four games. Prizes will be awarded to the winners, and numerous door prizes will also be awarded. The activities will include a silent auction.

2014 Relay for Life Tournament

A scotch doubles tournament to benefit the American Cancer Society will be held at Galaxy on Sunday, March 30, at 2 p.m.

Doubles partners alternate rolling a ball in the scotch doubles format. The entry fee is $15.

League highlights

Galaxy Classic

Mark Rogers bowled the high series (759) and game (279) on Monday. Randy Burgess rolled the second-best series (706), and Carl Daniels bowled the second-best game (277).

A 600 series was bowled by Donnie Philbeck (695), Todd Young (676), Brandon Simpson (657), J.J. Reisig (656), Ronnie Thomas (651), Aaron Rose (651), Lynn Estes (650), Daniels (650), Terry Jackson (649) and Mike Riley (648).

Shawn Barton (636), Glenn Masters (634), Patrick Wells (633), Gary Kerns (632), Joe Bailey (618), Neil Haggard (611), Lewis Jones, Jr. (609) and Steve Marionneaux (603) also reached the 600 series level.

Galaxy Girls

The high games Tuesday were 203 by Linda Combs and 191 by Donna Fourre, while the best series scores were 517 by Narita Rose and 515 by Combs

Jan Stepp picked up a 6-7-10 split and Carole Bales converted a 3-10 split.

Wednesday Wonders

Russell Jones (246) and Bill Bowles (244) bowled the high games last week, while the best series were 666 by Bowles and 653 by John Hickam.

A 600 series was also bowled by Lewis Jones, Jr. (619), Mark Rogers (603), Gary Holtzclaw (601) and Terry Jackson (601).

The best women’s scores were a 200 game and 456 series by Julia Landreth and a 464 series and 191 game by Jenny Norman.

Bill Schutters picked up a 5-7 split.

Classic Doubles

The high series scores last Thursday were 617 by Carl Daniels, 615 by Bobby Abrams and 602 by David Robinson.

The high games were 215 each by Daniels and Robinson, and 212 each by Abrams and Luke Sullivan.

Beverly Shearer with a 197 game and 515 series, and Denise Lakner with a 519 series and 193 game led the league’s ladies.

Sara Zuercher led the league’s ladies with a 237 game and 583 series, followed by Novel Davis at 221 and 503.


Linda Bowles bowled the top game (181) and series (486) Tuesday, followed by Connie Bowlin at 176 and 472.

Splits were converted by Jackie Collier (3-10), Brenda Underwood (4-10), Betty Morris (2-7) and Merle Motley (5-10).

Early Birds

The high games Wednesday morning were 196 by Gail Campbell, 195 by Renda Roberts and 192 by Beverly Shearer.

 This trio also bowled the high series scores — Campbell (541), Shearer (538) and Roberts (519).

Patriot League

T. J. Tudor bowled the high game last Thursday at 224, followed by Ray White and Greg Mudd at 213 each.

The best series scores were 593 by Mudd and 547 by Tudor.

Monday Fun League

Mac Bryan bowled the top game (213) and series (594) this week, followed by Sam Spangler at 192 and 529.

The best women’s games were 171 by Cheryl Crayton and 170 by Christy Andrews, while the high women’s series were bowled by Mary Mink (419) and Crayton (416).

Bad Bowlers No-tap

Nine pins down with the first ball in a frame counts as a strike in no-tap leagues.

April Brumfield led this league Tuesday with a 228 game and 608 series. Joanna Dickey bowled the second-best game (220), and she rolled the second-high women’s series (466).

The best men’s scores were a 214 game and 560 series by Aaron Wilson, and a 571 series and 205 game by Dean Acker.
