H.S. TENNIS: Berea duo claims championship

RICHMOND — The Berea Community tennis teams turned in some solid performances last weekend at the Berea Invitational.

The Pirates top doubles team — Steven and David Gadd — took the title, picking up two victories. They defeated Boyle County’s J.T. Henderson and Jacob Crowell, 6-0, 6-0, then defeated West Jessamine’s Hunter Haley and Tanner Sparks, 6-2, 6-3.

Alex Horn won her match against West Jessamine’s Britt Fugmann 6-2, 6-0, at No. 2 singles.

West Jessamine claimed the boys team championship, while Mercer County took the girls team title.

Berea vs. McCreary Central

On Monday, the Berea Community tennis teams played host to McCreary Central at the Berea College Tennis Court.

The Lady Pirates picked up a 5-2 win, while the Pirates fell, 5-3.

For the Lady Pirates, Alex Horn defeated Makayla Hamlin, 8-4; Emily Keyser defeated Anya Gresser, 8-2; Ruth Ramos defeated Kendall Keith, 8-5, while Mallory Lakes lost to Elizabeth Stewart, 8-2, and Virginia Deaver lost to Pascal Carlene, 8-2.

In the doubles, Horn and Ramos defeated Hamlin and Keith, 8-3, and Deaver and Lakes defeated Stewart and Grace Reardon in a close match, winning 9-8 (11-9 in a tiebreaker).

The Pirates got wins at No. 1, No. 2 and No. 5 singles, but lost both doubles matches.

David Gadd defeated Nathan Adkins, 8-0; Sam House defeated Cody Troxell, 8-4; Caleb Goss defeated Kobe Perry, 8-2, and also lost to Caleb Dobbs 8-5, while Dalton Gadd lost to Cole Clark 8-5 and Shay Steele lost to Dylan Troxell, 8-1.

In the doubles, David Gadd and Sam House lost to Clark and Dominic Rios, 8-5, and Dalton Gadd and Steele lost to Dylan Troxell and Josh Hansman, 8-6.

Berea is set to return to action Thursday at Berea College against Southwestern.
