H.S. TENNIS: Henry Clay tops Model

MADISON COUNTY — The Model Laboratory boys tennis team couldn’t knock off last year’s 11th Region champion Tuesday at Arlington Country Club.

Henry Clay swept both doubles matches and defeated the Patriots, 4-1.

“Tough loss to a really great team,” Model coach Ric Hernandez said. “On a positive note, we discovered a few things that we can easily work on to improve.”

Gus Benson gave Model its only victory of the match. At No. 1 singles, Benson beat Ryo Takeda, 6-3, 7-6 (5).

Benson has not lost a singles match against high-school level competition so far this season.

At No. 2 singles, Cole Wilson fell to Alex Dubilier, 6-0, 6-2. At No. 3 singles, Nate Frisbie lost to Sam Hughes, 8-1.

Both doubles matches were very competitive. At No. 1, Jack Frisbie and James Logue fell Alex Atwood and Keifer Mays, 6-4, 6-2. At No. 2, Blake Benson and Nolan Kelley lost to Luke Yurkowski and Eliot Smith 7-6 (6), 6-2.

In exhibition action, Model’s Levi Agee fell to David Chen, 8-6.

In exhibition doubles action, Russell Linnemeier and Jarett Insko lost to Phillip Priest and Will Andrews, 8-0, while Parker Hastings and Tyler Johnson suffered an 8-2 loss.

Model is set to return to action today at Lexington Catholic.
