The Lady Colonels (18-11) will be making their first postseason appearance since playing in the NCAA Tournament in 2005 when they take on Elon University at 7 p.m. today in the Women’s Basketball Invitational (WBI).
EKU is the No. 5 seed in the tournament, while Elon is seeded No. 4.
Eastern is 1-3 all-time in the postseason, with the only win coming against Missouri State in the 2002 WNIT.
The Lady Colonels are coming off a successful season in which they won 18 games, the most since the 2005 season. They finished in a three-way tie for second place in the OVC East Division. EKU defeated Murray State in the opening round of the OVC Tournament before falling to eventual champion Tennessee Martin, 78-63, in the quarterfinals.
Elon (18-8) finished in third place in the Southern Conference. The Phoenix won five of their past six games of the season before falling to Davidson in the semifinals of the SoCon Tournament.
The Phoenix are led by Ali Ford who enters the game averaging 16 points, 3.1 rebounds and four assists per game.
Kelsey Evans is second on the team in scoring at 14.8 points per game. She leads the team in rebounding, pulling down and average of 8.3 board per game. Kelsey Harris averages 9.2 points and 6.1 rebounds per game.
As a team, Elon averages 65.9 points per game while giving up an avenge of 63.7 points per game.
The Phoenix are shooting 41.9 percent from the floor and 32.4 percent from behind the three-point line, and average 16.9 turnovers per game while forcing their opponents into an 17.2 points per game.
This is the fourth year for the WBI and features 16 teams. First-round games will be played today and Thursday with second-round games played March 23 and 24. The championship game is set for March 30.
If they win, the Lady Colonels would take on the winner of the game between No. 1 seed Mercer and No. 8 seed McNeese State.
