H.S. BOYS SOCCER: Patriots battle back against Southern

RICHMOND — Just when the momentum really started to shift, the Patriots regained control.

And they didn’t let it slip away again.

Model Laboratory (14-2-2) scored twice in the final 9:49 of the game and rallied for a 4-3 win over Madison Southern (14-5-0) Thursday in the championship game of the 44th District Tournament at Madison Central High School.

The Patriots got two goals from John Reisig in the first half, but Chris Wylie’s goal off a corner kick with 8:51 left in the game turned out to be the game winner.

Model also won last year’s district title.

Both teams advance to next week’s 11th Region Tournament.

“They played really well,” Model coach Steve Savage said. “They battled through the adversity.”

Reisig scored less than eight minutes into the game after beating a defender out of the left corner, then gave Model a 2-0 lead with a goal with 13:13 left before halftime.

“We got such great goals, Savage said. “John’s goals were awesome. They were both from bad angles.”

That lead didn’t last.

Alex Sipple got loose through the middle on a breakaway and after his initial shot slipped through the hands of Model keeper Turner Curtis, he banged in the rebound with 5:18 left before halftime.

Southern tied the game on a penalty kick after Curtis was assessed a foul in the box. Sipple took the kick and connected with 28:17 left in the second half.

The Eagles took their only lead of the game when Lucas Reynolds scored with 11:08 left in the game.

Model even things up less than two minutes later when Noah Valencia found some open space and found the back of the net.

Wylie’s goal less than a minute later gave the Patriots the lead once again.

“(The district teams) play each other so much. It’s almost like a scrimmage,” Savage said. “They know what we are going to do and we know what they are going to do. It’s always a great matchup.”

Model defeated Madison Central in a shootout in the district title game.
