GOLF: Local golfers set to compete in State Amateur

RICHMOND — Five current members of the Eastern Kentucky University men’s golf team and two Richmond golfers will compete in the 103rd Kentucky Amateur Championship next week at Cherry Blossom Golf & Country Club in Georgetown.

Rising senior Taylor Riggs, junior Daniel DeLuca and sophomore Travis Rose will be joined in the field by incoming freshmen Jared Brown and Will Sallee.

 Richmond’s Chris Caldwell and Brad Newnam also earned a shot in the state amateur.

The 54-hole event will be contested over three days, beginning with the first round on Tuesday.

Hamrick wins at Campbellsville

Richmond’s Mason Hamrick took first place in the boys 10 and under division of the KYPGA Junior at Campbellsville Country Club on Wednesday.

Hamrick shot a +7, 44 and beat out Charlie Vowels of Vine Grove by three shots.

Clark wins at The Bull

Burgess Clark of Richmond claimed the top spot in the Boys College Division of the Musselman-Dunne Golf Tour event Monday at The Bull.

Clark shot 37 on the front nine and 38 on the back nine to record a 3-over par 75 to win the title by a stroke over Logan Smith of Nicholasville, who finished with a two-round total of 4-over par 76.

Several other local golfers also had good showings in the event.

Mason Hamrick finished second in the Boys 10 and under division, falling in a one-hole playoff.

Hamrick and Lucas Bischoff of Jeffersontown both finished with rounds of 42 to force a playoff. Bischoff claimed the victory by making a par on the first playoff hole.

Jordan Adams of Waco finished second in the boys championship division. He finished with a +7, 79 and finished seven strokes behind Justin Baker of Frankfort.

Abby Harrel placed third in the Girls 11-13 division, finishing with a +25, 61 for the day.

The Musselman-Dunne Tour returns to Richmond June 17 with a stop at Gibson Bay.
