H.S. TENNIS: Patriots use depth to defeat Russell

RICHMOND — The Model Laboratory tennis team picked up a big victory Saturday at Arlington Country Club.

The Patriots got strong singles and doubles play and defeated Russell, 6-3.

"They matched up with us well at the top portion of the lineup, but our depth proved to be the difference in pulling out a decisive win," Model coach Ric Hernandez said.

Russell defeated Model last season and advanced to the semifinals of the state team tournament.

This time around, the Patriots won four of the six singles matches and two of the three doubles matches.

At the No. 1 singles, Model’s Gus Benson rolled to a 6-1, 6-1 win. The Patriots fell at No. 2 singles — Jack Frisbie and No. 3 singles — Cole Wilson.

Model swept the other three singles matches without losing a set. James Logue defeated Kyle Groce, 6-3, 6-4. Nolan Kelley defeated Ben Strivger, 6-0, 6-0, and Blake Benson defeated Josh Griffith, 6-0, 6-0.

Model’s top doubles team — Frisbie and Logue — fell 8-5 in a tight match with Matthew Eastman and Alex Nguyen.

The Patriots’ other two doubles teams lost just six games.

Kelley and Benson picked up an 8-6 win and Levi Agee and Nate Frisbie rolled to an 8-0 win.

Model is now 3-0 on the season.

The Patriots are set to return to action Thursday at Sayre.
