H.S. FOOTBALL: Smith out, Scenters in as Madison Central football coach

RICHMOND — Chuck Smith stepped down as Madison Central football coach on Thursday, just three weeks after taking the job.

He was quickly replaced when Garrard County’s Mark Scenters was offered and accepted the position.

Smith is expected to return to Boyle County, the school he led to five-consecutive state championships (1999-2003).

Scenters is a Madison County native.

He graduated from Madison Southern in 1993 and served as Central’s offensive line coach under Kenny Turner for seven seasons.

Scenters has been the head coach at Garrard County for the past six years. He had an overall record of 40-33 and led the Golden Lions to playoffs wins in each of the past five seasons.

After having losing records his first three seasons at Garrard County (4-7 in 2008; 5-7 in 2009 and 5-7 in 2010), Scenters had a 26-12 record the past three seasons.

In 2011, the Golden Lions were 12-2 and advanced to the Class 3A State Semifinals. The past two seasons, Garrard County went 7-5 and advanced to the second round of the Class 3A Playoffs.

Central went 2-9 last season, prompting the firing of Bert Browne, who had been at the head coach at his alma mater for five years.

Smith coached at Boyle County for 13 seasons and his teams posted an overall l record of 142-33, including a 47-game winning streak.

Smith spent nine years as the linebackers coach at the University of Kentucky before being let go, along with the rest of the staff, after Joker Phillips was fired  last year.

Larry French led Boyle County to a 11-1 record last season, but earlier this week left the school to take over the program at Southwestern.

That set the stage for Smith to leave Central to return to Boyle County.
