BOXING: Local kids win big at ‘Jazz’ Akins Memorial Box-Off

RICHMOND — Five local boxers from Igo’s Boxing Club traveled to Johnson City, TN, on August 10, to compete in the first “Jazz” Akins Memorial Box-Off. Thomas Deck competed in the 65 lbs category beating out Tyler Burgess (Knoxville, TN) with a 3-0 decision while his brother, Gentry Deck (80 lbs) lost in a 2-1 split decision to Bryan Reynolds out of Georgia.

Brothers, Kegan Kavanaugh (114 lbs) and Anthony Martin (141 lbs) also competed on Saturday night. Kavanaugh started out slow in the first round but had his opponent, Erine Caves, from Greenville, SC, on the run by the third round. However, the pressure Kavanaugh started bringing to Caves in the second round was not enough to recover from the loss in the first half of the bout earning him a 2-1 split decision loss to Caves. Martin, an experienced amateur with more than 60 bouts under his belt, demonstrated his extensive ring experience with fast hands and slick foot work. In an almost playful fashion, he controlled the bout and his opponent, Trey Madison (Johnson City, TN) to a 3-0 decision win.

Also boxing on Saturday night was Jesus Oropeza (152 lbs). Oropeza won a 2-1 decision over C.J. Langley out of Roanoke, Va.
