H.S. SOCCER: Southern, South Laurel tie; Berea, Model win

It was the second consecutive tie game for the Southern girls soccer team.

The Lady Eagles jumped out to an early 1-0 lead on a goal by junior Rachel Ramey. The lead grew to 2-0 in the second half after junior Nicole Taylor drilled a shot past the South goalkeeper.

But after cutting the lead to 2-1 a few minutes later, the Lady Cardinals tied at 2-2 inside the final five minutes of the game.

Even though her team didn’t come away with the win, Southern coach Katy Cress said she was pleased with the improvement she’s seen in the last couple of games.

“I feel like each game we are getting better and better and tonight was the best we’ve looked offensively all year,” Cress said.

There have been some growing pains along the way as the Lady Eagles have played some stiff competition, but Cress said she feels like things are beginning to come together.

“We’ve switched some things around a little bit. So maybe we’ve found some people’s niches,” Cress said. “This was our best effort of the season. We’ve just got to hold it together when things don’t go our way. But we’ve definitely making improvement.”

The Lady Eagles return to action against Lexington Catholic at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday as part of a doubleheader with the boys team in Berea.
