OVC GOLF: Colonels claim title, Levin takes individual honors

RICHMOND — Four Eastern Kentucky  University women’s golf team members finished in the top 10 to lead the team to the 2014 Colonel Classic title Saturday in Richmond.

EKU’s Sofie Levin captured the individual title by two shots.

The Colonels won by six shots over second-place Morehead State University.

Levin shot a final-round 75 to move from a tie for third to first with a 36-hole total of 152. Emilie Simmons finished tied for second after starting the day tied for 12th. The freshman shot rounds of 79 and 75 for a total of 154. Rachel Welker (155) and Anna Gleixner (155) tied for fourth overall.

EKU was the wire-to-wire leader, shaving 10 shots off its first-round score for a second round 303 on Saturday. The Colonels were two shots better than anyone else during the final round. EKU’s 36-hole total of 616 was six shots better than Morehead State (622).

Xavier (628) was third and Marshall (634) was fourth.

The 12-team event was held at the par-72, 5,838-yard Arlington Golf Club.

EKU has concluded its regular season schedule. The team will take part in the Ohio Valley Conference Championship on April 21-23 in  Muscle Shoals, Ala.
