OVC BASEBALL: Morehead tops EKU in first-ever game under the lights at Turkey Hughes Field

RICHMOND — In the first ever night baseball game at Turkey Hughes Field Friday, it was rival Morehead State playing spoiler in a 4-3 victory over Eastern Kentucky University Friday evening.

The Eagles (14-15, 6-7 OVC) scored singles runs in the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh innings to break a nine-game losing streak to the Colonels (13-16, 4-6).

EKU opened the scoring in the third inning on a two-out RBI double from sophomore Doug Teegarden.

Morehead State responded with solo home runs by Bobby Burns and Kane Sweeney to take a 2-1 lead. The Colonels quickly evened the score in the bottom of the fifth when freshman Taylor Blair scored from third after a throwing error on a pick-off attempt.

However, the Eagles took the lead for good in the sixth on a Ryan Kent sacrifice fly. Chris Robinson added an RBI triple to deep left center field in the seventh to make the score, 4-2.

EKU scored a run in the eighth, but went down in order in the ninth inning.

Morehead State starting pitcher Luke Humphreys (2-1) struck out eight and held the Colonels to three hits in 5 1/3 innings to earn the win. Three MSU relievers held Eastern to just one hit over the final 3 2/3 innings.

Senior Tanner Perkins (2-5) took the loss as the lefty gave up three earned runs on 13 hits in 6 1/3 innings.

The two teams will play the second game of the series at 6 p.m. today.
