LEXINGTON — On a chilly October evening, the Patriots’ season came to an end at the hands of the Yellow Jackets.

Woodford County beat Model 3-1 to advance to the second round of the 11th region Tournament at Henry Clay High School.

The scoring started early as the Patriots jumped out to a 1-0 lead off a beautiful free kick from Andrew Wiley. Wiley curved the ball into the back post following a careless foul by a Yellow Jacket defender.

“We started off nervous,” Woodford  coach Fonyam Atanga said after the game. “We gave up that stupid foul and we got scored on, but I’m proud of the way we fought back.”

Woodford answered just 13 minutes later.

Michael Ethington was able to knock the ball in after it bounced around the box. The Yellow Jackets went on to add two more, one by Daniel Christian and the other by Isaac Hayes, in a similar fashion. On each of the goals Woodford exploited the defense by swinging the ball out wide and using their speed to get the ball in for two point-blank shots.

Model head coach Steve Savage said after the game, “We just were not prepared for the size of this field and that’s my fault.”

Savage also wanted to thank his four seniors, “They’ve done so much for this program and I could not be happier with their performance this year.”

Model finishes the season with a 14-3-2 record.
