OVC BASKETBALL: Colonels looking snap two-game skid

RICHMOND — The Colonels (10-6, 1-2 OVC) will try to end a two-game losing skid and hand Morehead State (11-6, 2-0 OVC) its first conference loss today when the long-time rivals meet in Morehead.

Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.

EKU suffered its second straight loss, and its first home loss of the season, Wednesday, 77-64, to Murray State.

The Racers used a smothering defense to hold OVC leading scorer, Glenn Cosey, to only five points in the game. That, combined with MSU’s dominance on the backboards, helped the Racers to control the Colonels’ potent transition game and win handily.

Corey Walden had a season-best 24 points against the Racers, while Tarius Johnson added 16 points and a team-high eight rebounds.

Heading into conference play, EKU was leading the OVC in defense, holding opponents to just over 67 points per game.

But after giving up 243 points — 81 points per game — in their three conference games, the Colonels dropped to second in the conference in defense, allowing an average of 69.7 points per contest.

In that three-game stretch, EKU’s opponents averaged shooting 50 percent or better from the field.

Four Colonels are averaging in double figures scoring on the year.

Cosey continues to lead the way, pouring in an average of 19.1 points per contest, while Corey Walden is adding 13.1 points per game, Marcus Lewis averages 11.9 points per game and Orlando Williams, 10.9 points per game.

Morehead is coming off an 86-77 road win over Eastern Illinois on Wednesday.

Three Eagles are averaging double figures in scoring on the season.

Angelo Warner leads the way for the Eagles at 17.3 points and 5.1 rebounds per game. Brent Arrington comes in averaging 11.4 per game, while Chad Posthumus is adding 11.1 points and a league-leading 12.4 rebounds per game.

Rebounding once again will have a lot to do with who comes out on top tonight.

Against EIU on Wednesday, Posthumus hauled in 14 rebounds for the Eagles. The Colonels as a team pulled down only 26 boards against Murray State on Wednesday.

Morehead comes in averaging 79.5 points per game, while holding its opponents to 72.9 points per game. The Eagles have gone to the free throw line 510 times on the year, hitting 65.1 percent of those.

The Colonels have gone to the line 350 times on the year, hitting 73.4 percent of those.

MSU averages 16 turnovers per game, while EKU turns it over an average of 10.1 times per contest.
