OVC BASKETBALL: EKU looking to extend winning streak to five

RICHMOND — The Lady Colonels (7-5, 1-0 OVC) will be looking for their fifth consecutive win today when they take on SIU-Edwardsville  (4-9, 1-0 OVC) at 5 p.m. in Edwardsville Ill.

EKU has not won five straight games since the 2004-05 season.

The Lady Colonels are coming off an 86-72 win over Murray State in their Ohio Valley Conference opener on Monday.

Senior Marie Carpenter, the conference’s leading scorer at 28.1 points per game, led four Lady Colonels in double figures with a game-high 23 points.

Shelly Harper added 15 points and six rebounds, while Michaela Hunter had a huge night, recording her first career double-double with 13 points, a team-best 10 rebounds and three assists.

The Lady Colonels will be looking for only their second ever win over SIUE. The Lady Cougars lead the series with EKU 5-1 and have won the last four games. SIUE defeated the Lady Colonels 73-69 in overtime in Richmond in Jan. 5, 2013.

The Lady Cougars are coming off a 68-56 win over Belmont on Monday in their conference opener.

Freshman Micah Jones had her first career double-double against Belmont, scoring 20 points and pulling down 12 rebounds.

She was named OVC Freshman of the Week honors for her performance against the Lady Bruins.

Junior guard Tierny Austin leads SIUE, averaging 12.8 points per game. Sophomore guard Coco Moore adds 11.2 points per game, while sophomore Jessie Wendt is averaging 10.2 points per game.
