H.S. HOOPS: Central tops Lawrence County in overtime

RICHMOND — The Indians wrapped up play in the Gateway Holiday Classic in Mt. Sterling with a hard-fought win Sunday over Lawrence County.

Five players reached double figures in scoring, led by Demarcus George (23 points, 10 rebounds), as Madison Central picked up a 93-89 overtime victory. Cameron Thomas had 18 points, nine rebounds, four assists and three blocks, Kirk Humphrey had 16 points and five assists and Sam Jones had 15 points and 10 rebounds as the Indians (10-3) took third-place in the tournament.

The game, which was Central’s third overtime contest already this season, featured 15 ties and 10 lead changes.

The Indians trailed 77-75 with 44 seconds left in regulation, but Thomas hit a lay-up moments later, then also blocked a would-be game winning shot in the closing seconds.

In overtime, Central took a quick lead on two Thomas free throws. But Lawrence County battled back to take an 82-81 lead with 2:29 left.

The Indians went on a 7-2 run, highlighted by a three from Humphrey, to retake the lead for good.

Central had a five-point lead after the first quarter (26-21) and was up 42-38 at halftime. Lawrence County tied the game at 57 after three quarters, setting up a wild final period.

The fourth quarter featured seven ties and five lead changes. Central led by five points early in the quarter and Lawrence County was up by four points late in the period.

Coty Alexander had 13 points, Isaiah Johnson had four points and Seth Richardson added two points.

Central was just 21-of-35 from the free throw line, but did hit five-of-seven attempts from the line in overtime. The Indians shot 52 percent from the field for the game, despite committing 17 turnovers.

Central is set to return to action Friday at Berea Community.
