H.S. BASKETBALL: Patriots top Fairview and Frankfort

RICHMOND — After falling in the opening round of the Our Lady of Bellefonte Holiday Classic in Greenup County, the Patriots rebounded to pick up a pair of wins.

Model Laboratory lost to East Carter, 58-56, on Thursday, then defeated Fairview, 56-54, on Friday and beat Frankfort, 71-61, Saturday in the championship game of the consolation bracket.

With the wins, the Patriots improve to 9-2 on the season.

In the victory over Frankfort, senior Jared Adams had 17 points, Alex Chen had 15 points, Ephraim Otieno had 14 points and Zack Rice-Gordon added 12 points.

The Patriots had a 22-9 lead after the first quarter and were up 40-25 at halftime. Frankfort never got closer than eight points in the second half.

“This was a game that we really wanted to play well in,” Model coach Wes Scarberry said.

In the win over Fairview, Adams missed a three pointer, but senior Keith Mason had a putback at the buzzer to give Model the victory.

The game was tied 26-26 at halftime and the Patriots had a 40-39 lead after three quarters.

Rice-Gordon had 19 points, Chen had 17 points and Otieno had 10 points.

The Patriots had an 11-point lead after three quarters (44-33), but East Carter rallied for a win on Thursday in the opening round of the tournament.

East Carter scored 25 points in the fourth quarter, including five three-pointers.

“I felt like we out-played them for most of the game,” Scarberry said.

Otieno had 23 points and was nine-of-13 from the free throw line. Mason had 11 points, Rice-Gordon had nine points and Adams finished with seven points.

Model is set to return to action Tuesday at home against Garrard County.
