OVC BASKETBALL: Lady Colonels set for home opener

RICHMOND — The Lady Colonels will be looking for their second win of the season when they take on Alabama A&T today in their home opener at McBrayer Arena.

EKU fell to Kent State 75-74 in overtime Sunday after opening the season with a win at Miami (Ohio) on Friday.

Senior Marie Carpenter has scored 53 points in the first two games.

She followed up her opening-game 27-point performance against Miami (Ohio) with 26 points against Kent State.

Carpenter scored 21 of her points in the second half against Kent State, including a shot with five seconds remaining that sent the game into overtime.

With the game tied, 56-56, and less than two minutes to play, she sank a jumper to give the Lady Colonels the lead. After Kent State tied it again with just less than a minute remaining, she knocked down another go-ahead jump shot. Then, with the Lady Colonels trailing by two and less than 10 seconds on the clock, she forced overtime with her third bucket in the final two minutes of regulation.

Three Lady Colonels had career-high games against Kent State, Pilar Walker (16), Shelly Harper (14) and Jasmine Stafford (10).

Through two games, four Lady Colonels are averaging double figures in scoring.

Carpenter leads the way with 26 points and six rebounds per game. Walker is next with 16 points, three assists per game, Harper with 14 points and a team-high nine rebounds per game and Stafford with 10 points and four rebounds per game.

The Lady Colonels and Lady Bulldogs have never played before. The Lady Bulldogs lost to OVC member Southeast Missouri State last week, 76-64.
