H.S. BASEBALL/SOFTBALL: Berea falls, Southern rallies late to beat Clark County

BEREA — Nikea Banther hit a home run, but the Lady Pirates couldn’t come up with enough offense to beat Estill County Tuesday at home.

The Lady Engineers jumped out to a quick lead and went on to pick up an 11-1 six-inning victory.

The loss was the fourth-straight for Berea (3-9).

Estill County scored twice in each of the first three innings, then scored a run in the fourth and four more times in the sixth inning.

Banther homered in the fourth inning.

Allie Maynard, Miranda Montgomery and Kayla DeBoard also had hits for Berea.

Jenny Ingram went the distance in the circle.

Berea is set to return to action Thursday at home against Southwestern.

Southern 3, Clark County 2

Briana Lanham delivered the game-winning hit in the sixth inning as Madison Southern rallied for a 3-2 win over Clark County Tuesday in Berea.

The Lady Eagles (12-5) trailed 2-0, but pulled even with a run in the fifth inning.

After Lanham put Southern on top, the Lady Cardinals threatened in the seventh against Southern pitcher Tara Bord. Clark County had runners on first and third with one out, but Bord got a pop up and a strikeout to end the game.

Southern has won five of its past six games.

The Lady Eagles left the bases loaded twice. Bethany Mays, Kelley Freeman, Taylor Johnson and Alex Nash each had hits for Southern.

The Lady Eagles are set to return to action Thursday at home against North Laurel.

Boyle County 5, Central 0

The Lady Indians (6-9) had their chances to earn a road win Tuesday against Boyle County.

But, they stranded eight runners in scoring position and couldn’t push across in a run, suffering a 5-0 loss. The Lady Rebels got all five of their runs in the third inning.

Sophomore MacKenzie Wilder gave up six hits (five of which came in the third) and just one walk. She had six strikeouts.

Central is set to return to action Thursday at South Laurel.
