H.S. BASKETBALL: Model handles Beechwood, 58-41

RICHMOND — For the second-straight game, the Patriots jumped out to a big early lead.

And for the second-straight game, they used that early momentum to roll to an easy win at home.

Model Laboratory (2-0) closed the first quarter on a 12-0 run and went on to pick up a 58-41 win Friday over Beechwood. Jared Adams had 18 points and 10 rebounds for the Patriots, while Ephraim Otieno had 15 points.

“We had a lot of steals off our press that led to some easy baskets,” Model coach Wes Scarberry said. “It was a good defensive effort, too.”

Model led 25-9 after one quarter and took a 35-23 advantage into halftime. Tigers were never able to cut the Patriots’ lead to single-digits in the second half.

Beechwood had a pair of 6-foot-5 post players, but Model was able to control the pace of the game and keep those big men from making a big impact.

Zack Rice-Gordon had 11 points, seven rebounds and three assists, Alex Chen had 12 rebounds and three points and Keith Mason had nine points and four rebounds.

Model is set to return to action at 7 p.m. today at home against Eminence.
