H.S. HOOPS: Eagles come up big late, pick up first win

BEREA — The Eagles got big plays down the stretch from younger players and held on for their first victory of the season Thursday in Berea.

Freshman Michael Jefferson scored all seven of his points in the fourth quarter and sophomore Branden Sargent had 12 points, including back-to-back three-pointers in the third quarter, as Madison Southern defeated Garrard County (1-2), 62-55.

Sophomore Stacy Burns had a team-best 15 points for the Eagles (1-3) and sophomore Tanner Kidwell added 11 points.

“We didn’t play our best game,” Southern coach Shane Buttry said. “But we made plays in the second half.”

Southern had a 16-8 lead after the first quarter and took a 27-14 lead (its biggest of the game) in the second quarter on a three-pointer by Sargent.

Garrard County responded with an 11-1 run and the Eagles were up just 28-25 at halftime.

The Golden Lions took the lead early in the third quarter, but Southern pulled even at  50-50 on a Burns jumper in the lane and never trailed again.

Jefferson came up big in the fourth quarter. The freshman hit a three pointer then connected on four-straight free throws to help the Eagles keep the lead.

“He really stepped up,” Buttry said of Jefferson.

Devante Linville had nine points, Andrew Miller had five points, Trevor Huff had two points and Caleb Miller finished with a point.

Southern is set to return to action Friday at Oldham County.
