Madison Southern bounces back with lopsided victory; Berea falls to Garrard Co.

Madison Southern bounced back from a season-opening loss to Madison Central to post a solid victory Thursday at the Seabury Center in Berea.
The Eagles (1-1) built a 25-point second-half lead, then cruised a 75-58 win over Washington County. Joey Wallace had a team-high 18 points and 11 rebounds, Carrington Roberts had 15 points, three assists and four rebounds and Aaron Ponder added a career-high 11 points.
Southern had just a four-point lead after the first quarter (18-14), but used a 23-10 run in the second to take control.
Philip Acres also had eight points, while Chastain Schneider and Chase Bowling each had six points. Roberts was three-of-four from three-point range and Ponder had nine points in the third quarter.
The Eagles will return to action next Friday at Model.
Garrard County 47, Berea Community 21
The Pirates fell behind big early and were never able to recover Thursday at home against Garrard County.
Berea Community trailed 14-2 after the first quarter and went on to suffer a 47-21 loss. The Pirates (0-2) trailed by just seven points at the half, but were outscored 29-10 in the final two quarters.
Logan Hutchins had a team-high seven points for Berea. Chase Riddle added six points, Jeremy Hamilton had five points and Ben Miller and Ryan Smith each had three points.
The Pirates are set to return to action Saturday at Frankfort.
Madison Central swim team improves to 4-0
The Madison Central swim team continued its winning ways with a double dual victory over East Jessamine and West Jessamine Thursday in Richmond.
The Indians beat East Jessamine, 155-20, and West Jessamine, 138-40, in the combined scoring. Central won every relay and 11 of the 16 individual events.
Caroline Smith, an eighth-grader from Madison Middle School, broke the Madison Central High School record in the 200-yard freestyle event, turning in a time of 2:03.18. Sophomore Rikki Babuka broke the Central record in the 200-yard individual medley, a posting a time of 2:18.85.
Junior Thomas Brown took first in the 200-yard free and 100-yard fly. Other first-place finishers for Central included: Molly Ford (50-yard free); Summer Spillman (100-yard fly, 100-yard back); Megan Laird (500-yard free); Ryan Speece (100-back) and John Babuka (500-yard free).
Rikki Babuka also won the 100-yard free.
The Indians are back in action at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 11 against George Rogers Clark at the Telford YMCA.
