Berea teams fall at Asbury Classic

Both Berea College basketball teams struggled Saturday during play at the Asbury Classic.

The women’s team fell to 1-2 on the season with a 66-60 loss to Bluefield College, while the men’s team lost, 73-60, to St. Catherine.

The Lady Mountaineers were only down 38-34 at halftime, but only shot 37 percent field goal percentage, including 10 percent from beyond the arc, for the game and couldn’t complete the comeback.

Heather Hutchins led Berea with 16 points off of 6-of-12 shooting, while Meagan Downs had 12 points, which included 6-of-8 from the free-throw line. Emily Hinkson had nine points, AnnBruce Madden and Raven Hunt had five points, both Ashley Fowler and Tiffany Yates scored four points and Ebony Inskeep added two points.

In Friday’s 71-62 win over Virginia Intermont, the Lady Mountainers shot a dismal 27 percent from the floor, but took advantage 44-32 halftime lead. Hinkson had 20 points off 5-of-9 shooting, while Madden scored 16, Downs and Fowler both added seven and Kayla McFarland scored six.

In Saturday’s game with St. Catherine, Berea shot 36.5 percent from the floor, but couldn’t overcome three St. Catherine players in double figures. Ervin Williams scored 17, Josh Edwards added 16 and Adam Decker scored 12 as Berea fell to 1-1 on the season.

Mikah Turner scored 20 off of 8-of-21 shooting, and Rudy Evans added 11. Josh Clark and Alex Hinton both scored seven points and Rodney Goodson added six. The Mountaineers were out-rebounded, 50-37.

Turner also had 20 points in Friday’s 99-66 win over Virginia Intermont. Evans added 19, Prince Stewart scored 17 and both Kevin Burrus and Will Barber added 11 points. Berea shot 51 percent from the floor.

The men will return to action Tuesday at home against Boyce College. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m. The women will face Walsh University Friday in Berea, with game time set for 6 p.m.
